Valkyrie: The North American Xb-70 : The Usa's Ill-Fated Supersonic Heavy Bomber

                "The USA's ill-fated supersonic heavy bomber."--Front cover.

During the 1950s, at the time Elvis Presley was rocking the world with Hound Dog and the USA was aiming to become the world's only superpower, plans were being drawn at North American Aviation in Southern California for an incredible Mach-3 strategic bomber. The concept was born as a result of General Curtis LeMay's desire for a heavy bomber with the weapon load and range of the subsonic B-52 and a top speed in excess of the supersonic medium bomber, the B-58 Hustler. If LeMay's plans came to fruition there would be 250 Valkyries in the air; it would be the pinnacle of his quest for the ultimate strategic bomber operated by America's Strategic Air Command. The design was a leap into the future that pushed the envelope in terms of exotic materials, avionics and power plants. However, in April 1961, Defense Secretary McNamara stopped the production go-ahead for the B-70 on grounds of rapid cost escalation and the USSR's newfound ability of destroying aircraft at extremely high altitude by either missiles or the new Mig-25 fighter. Nevertheless, in 1963 plans for the production of three high-speed research aircraft were approved and construction proceeded. In September 1964 the first Valkyrie, now re-coded A/V-1 took to the air for the first time and in October went supersonic. This book is the most detailed description of the design, engineering and research that went into this astounding aircraft. It is full of unpublished details, photographs and firsthand accounts from those closely associated with the project. Although never put into full production, this giant six engined aircraft became famous for its breakthrough technology, and the spectacular images captured on a fatal air-to-air photo shoot when an observing Starfighter collided with Valkyrie A/V-2 which crashed into the Mojave Desert. The loss of the $750 million aircraft and two lives stopped future development, although there were several attempts to redesign it as an airliner to compete against the European Concorde.

Tupolev Tu-22 Blinder: Supersonic Bomber, Attack, Maritime Patrol and Electronic Countermeasures Aircraft (Paperback)

This historic Russian aircraft was first delivered to the Soviet Air Force at the height of the Cold War in 1961. It remained in service until replaced by the much modified Tu-22M Backfire which was introduced in the early 1970s and still remains in service. It was the first Soviet supersonic bomber and was used for reconnaissance and bombing, in the latter role carrying either conventional or nuclear bombs. The early aircraft had a range of 1,800 miles but later models had a much increased radius of action through the introduction of in-flight refueling. This book looks at the design and development of the aircraft up to the introduction of the type M Backfire. Details of construction, weapon systems, photo-reconnaissance and jamming equipment are included to cover the several variant models. Operational use is explained and the text includes many firsthand accounts from Russian aircrew of the period. The book will be superbly illustrated by unique official photographs and manuals.

USAF Strategic Bomber Operations : B-52h, B-1b and B-2a, Operation Allied Force, Balkans 1999

In spring 1999 the NATO Alliance launched Operation Allied Force - a sustained 79 day bombing campaign against Serbia. This campaign saw the USAF employ all three types of strategic bombers in its inventory, the B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, with a diversity of guided and unguided ordnance being employed. The purpose of this volume is to describe the operational use of the triad of USAF strategic bombers employed against Serbia. It is not the remit of this volume to discuss the rights and wrongs of the campaign, or give an in depth political or military analysis, although there will, of course, be occasions when politics and ethics emerge in the narration of events. The volume also briefly describes the strategic bomber trio, B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, employed in the campaign, as well as the ordnance dropped, and narrates the strategic bomber roadway from the United States extraction from the Vietnam War in 1973 to the inventory in 1999. Appendices detail the bombers that took part in the operation and the weapons employed. All facts and figures used in the preparation of this volume have come from official source documentation such as the USAF and NATO.

Contents: The Manned Penetrating Bomber: Time to Reconsider? * 2019 U.S. Intelligence Community Worldwide Threat Assessment.During the Cold War, the United States constructed a nuclear triad, which consists of three components: strategic bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). The triad's mission was to ensure that the U.S. nuclear force would not be crippled or destroyed should an enemy attempt a first strike attack against the United States. This in turn offered a credible threat of a U.S.-launched second strike, enhancing the overall effectiveness of our deterrent strategy. This thesis challenges a central tenet of traditional U.S. nuclear doctrine by asking, "Is the Triad still needed?" Although some in the Air Force, along with various government personnel and those outside of the National Capital Region, have questioned the continued reliance on the bomber, there has been insufficient debate about either the bomber's deterrence value or second-strike launch capability in the event that nuclear deterrence collapses. This research examines the historic and contemporary reasons for maintaining bombers as part of the Triad. This thesis concludes that the strategic bomber should be removed from the Triad and the financial savings be redistributed to the remaining legs of the newly formed nuclear dyad.I. Introduction * II. History Of The Nuclear Triad *III. Post-Cold War Bomber Mission * IV. Current State Of Nuclear Deterrence Doctrine And Strategy * V. The Way Ahead For Strategic DeterrenceIn the post-Cold War era, America is confronted by an evolving political backdrop that challenges our decision makers in how to best utilize our military capabilities to sustain our national interests. Nowhere are these questions more pertinent than in the role of nuclear weapons in U.S. security policy. The United States built a nuclear arsenal, made of traditional strategic bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). If an enemy attempted a first strike attack against the U.S., the triad's mission would be to ensure that its nuclear force would not be crippled or destroyed. This action would ensure a credible threat of a second strike, which ultimately, would result in the increase of effectiveness of our deterrent. This thesis addresses a central issue in U.S. nuclear strategy: Is the Triad still necessary? What role does each component of the Triad still play? There has been insufficient debate about whether or not the bomber has effectively deterred our enemies or our ability to use its capability in the launch of nuclear weapons in the event that nuclear deterrence collapses. The continuing need for nuclear-capable bombers should be questioned. A broader discussion is needed. This thesis is intended to contribute to that broader discussion. To examine this question, the thesis examines the history of the triad, its stated rationales that have evolved over time, with an assessment of the relevance of the triad to today's strategic environment. The thesis draws empirical evidence principally from U.S. government strategy documents and presidential statements and from secondary source documents that frame the arguments over different aspects of the triad. The thesis will specifically focus upon the manned bomber leg of the triad.
